Daily Workshops - Friday 17th May 2024
The fifth and final day of the School Programme sees a packed programme of events with seven celebrated Authors, Illustrators, Podcasters and Director! What an end to an truly inspirational schoolâs programme for Bude Literary Festival 2024!
Ella McLeod will be joining us to share with her collection of prose and poetry, lauded as a genre-defying and defining fairy tale reimagining. Joff Winterhart will be doing a Drawing and Writing Workshop that looks at working with pictures and words together with the mystery of humour and storytelling. Sarah Tagholm who is a children’s author who loves writing about confused animals, mischievous children and all things funny! Story Legend Authors Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre have joined their talents to bring you the World of ‘Adventuremice’. From all these, add in Roger McGough sharing his expertise and favourite collection of poems and Jethro Compton, who’ll be exploring how to write stories that appeal to a modern audience you can be sure that there is something for everyone in this day packed full of inspirational workshops.
You will notice that each artist has all the information on their workshop, including the content, the audience age range and number of students and the timings of each session. This should help you to make an informed decision as to whether this session is suitable to you. Ideally the children will be made aware of the author’s work and books before the person arrives at your school. All the sessions will be the author visiting your school and will ideally have some help from one of our Volunteers. We do ask that if you require additional safeguarding paperwork for visitors, that you contact our Event Programmer to request any additional information that will help to speed up the signing in process. Â
HOW TO BOOK – Places are booked on a first come, first serve basis. Once you are happy with your choice, you can then quote the author/artist name and number of session/s you are interested in then pop an email to our Event Programmer; Richard Wolfenden-Brown to book a space on info@northcoastarts.co.uk.Â
Bude/Stratton Schools have priority booking from 19th January until 19th February. These then open up to other schools via an invitation email, which is due to be delivered to schools on 20th February 2024.
All the workshops are interactive and relevant across the curriculum. They offer exciting opportunities for active participation across the whole school age range from Reception to 6th Form. 86 years-old and at that awkward age between birth and death, Roger will visit your school to share poems from his latest collection âCollected Poems of Roger McGoughâ, as well as some old favourites.
Roger McGough has published over 100 poetry books for adults and children. Called âthe patron saint of poetryâ, he was one of the Liverpool Poets, who influenced popular culture in the Sixties and published The Mersey Sound, one of the bestselling poetry anthologies of all time. This is an extremely rare opportunity to welcome Roger to your school.

A two-part practical workshop exploring how to write stories that appeal to a modern audience. In the first session, Jethro will share some simple and effective tricks that help a writer ensure their story is exciting, compelling, and suitable for an audience with an ever-decreasing attention span. Using these methods, in the second session, Jethro will work with the group to grow their own ideas and look at how these ideas can be developed into more fully realised stories.
Jethro attended Budehaven Community School and is a Cornish writer, director and theatre producer. âIn 2010 he established Jethro Compton Productions directing âThe Bunker Trilogyâ, âThe Capone Trilogyâ, and his own writing, âThe Man Who Shot Liberty Valanceâ, âThe Frontier Trilogyâ, âSireniaâ, âWolf’s Bloodâ and most recently âThe Curious Case of Benjamin Buttonâ which enjoyed rave reviews at The Southwark Playhouse London. He was an Associate Artist of Hall for Cornwall from 2016 to 2023.

Join story legends Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre to explore the world of the Adventuremice, a brave team of mice who keep the Mouse Islands safe from danger. Learn how to draw one of the characters, and help Philip and Sarah create an interactive Adventuremice game.
A rare opportunity for a whole year group to be inspired by two celebrated authors with strong west country associations. Philip Reeve has written more than twenty books, including the Mortal Engines series and the Utterly Dark trilogy. Sarah McIntyre is the author and illustrator of picture books including Grumpycorn and There’s a Shark in the Bath. Philip and Sarah have worked together on funny, highly illustrated adventures such as Oliver and the Seawigs, Pugs of the Frozen North and the Roly Poly Flying Pony books. Their latest series, Adventuremice, is packed with excitement and inspired by Sarahâs paintings of seafaring mice.

Ella McLeodâs debut, Rapunzella, or, Donât Touch My Hair, was published in 2022 and was lauded as a genre-defying and defining fairy tale reimagining, combining poetry and prose. Her second book, The Map That Led To You, is an epic and ambitious fantasy about freedom, love and home. Set across two worlds, it weaves a narrative between Caribbean and European sea mythology, featuring pirates, witches, a powerful mermaid, and a mysterious sea dragon. Ella is also a podcaster and public speaker, and graduated first in her class from Warwick University in 2017, where she returned to give the commencement address this year.

âWe will look at working with PICTURES and WORDS, and what happens when you put them TOGETHER in different WAYS, and the mystery and humour and storytelling that might then occur…?!?! So, some drawing and some writing and some looking, and hopefully…some fun!?â
Joff Winterhart is an illustrator, writer, film-maker, drummer, songwriter, T-shirt maker, rock ânâ roll fan and dog enthusiast. He has written and drawn two successful graphic novels, âDays of the Bagnold Summerâ, and âDriving Short Distancesâ (2017). He lives in Bristol, plays drums, writes songs in the long-standing band Bucky and thinks about getting a new dog.

Doesn’t life move fast? One moment you’re in the Wibbly, relaxing with your Wibbly friends. The next, they’ve all grown tails and turned into tadpoles! And what’s more, they are bursting OUT of the Wibbly … AND you’ve got to keep up!
Join childrenâs author and Cornish resident Sarah Tagholm for an interactive, high energy event that speaks perfectly to the anxiety that children can feel about keeping up with those around them. We Are the Wibbly is a gorgeous narrative picture book that also includes a STEM-by-stealth element, tracking the journey of one little tadpole towards becoming a frog. Includes a draw-along and interactive reading â for children aged 4+.
