Vyvyen Brendon - ‘Children at Sea: Lives shaped by the Waves'

12pm - 1pm | £3 | Willoughby Gallery, The Castle

Vyvyen Brendon is the great-granddaughter of a Scillonian master mariner, who signed on as an apprentice aged 14, and died while still at sea, as did four of his brothers. This what inspired her to write Children at Sea, which tells the stories of youngsters who left home to cross the oceans, as transported convicts, slaves, midshipmen or migrants. The talk will focus especially on the sea journeys of those born in the West Country.
